Create phase

We started creating our game. One part of the group wrote the script for the car radio and recorded the lines. Afterwards, we began editing the audio track with filters and jingles to resemble a radio broadcast. The other part of the group programmed the game, making the physics of the side-scroller work, and inserting obstacles to dodge. We discussed how the game transitions between levels and how every level would look and feel.

We want to use the game to illustrate how many people use escapism to ignore reality - and especially those in need. The character inside the car ignores their surroundings and the pleas for help from the car radio - slowly building tension until the car is unable to drive further, forcing the character to stop running from reality. We're inspired by the Sawdy 46 and Just these artworks. When writing the script, we were inspired by the war in Ukraine and the statistics of casualties and refugees fleeing the country.

Additionally, we're attempting to make the game feel a bit off by using funky music in between the more serious radio announcements. We're timing the pacing of the audio track to the gameplay of the side-scroller in the car window.  The obstacles change from pumpkins and trees to emergency aid cars and missiles. The game creates a morbid contrast between the  the serious themes and the cute, cartoonish style to illustrate the escape from reality - until the character can no longer drive away.

Lastly, we're discussing how to use our time most efficiently. Debating how to prioritize polish, sound effects, gameplay and editing the audio track within the last few hours. During this time, we decided to create all three levels of the car ride to illustrate the whole game experience with the audio track. If we have time, we want to add sound effects to the movement of the car window and impact between the avatar and obstacles when the player fails to dodge. If we had more time, we could spend it adjusting the difficulty levels and placement of obstacles in each level. Later, we could add shadows to the obstacles and texture the background to look more polished.
